Antarctic Event Series

Antarctica is pivotal to the global climate system. ​This Event Series, hosted by the Environmental Hub, will explore key themes of environmental protection, wildlife and climate change in Antarctica. The Event Series, delivered by experts working in Antarctica, will include Discover Antarctica Training and Antarctic Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Training.

Attendees can choose to attend either or both events. Attendees will have the opportunity to attend the Evening Reception Launch Event.

Evening Reception Launch Event

Purpose

This evening reception will launch the Antarctic Event series, the inaugural event for the Environmental Hub. The event will bring together the Antarctic and wider environmental community, including the friends of the Environmental Hub and attendees of the short courses. The event will feature short videos about Antarctica as well as an art and photography exhibition.  

Welcome drinks and canapes will be served. 

Who Should Attend

The evening reception launch event is designed for members of the Antarctic and broader environmental community, well as attendees of the short courses. ​ Attendees will gain insights into Antarctica through short videos, an art and photography exhibition, and networking opportunities with experts and peers. ​ The event aims to foster collaboration, raise awareness about environmental issues in Antarctica, and provide a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences in a relaxed setting. ​

Discover Antarctica Short Course

Purpose

A rare opportunity to gain an understanding or enhance your knowledge about the Antarctic environment, delivered by experts in their field.

Discover Antarctica Short Course is designed for those wishing to gain an understanding or enhance their knowledge about environmental protection, wildlife and climate change in Antarctica with up to date and current information. 

It is open to all and does not require any prior qualifications or Antarctic experience.

The course is in the process of achieving endorsement by the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES).

Who Should Attend?

The Discover Antarctica Short Course is designed for a wide range of organisations and individuals interested in understanding Antarctica's environment, ecology, and the impacts of climate change.

It can be used to outsource environmental training by organisations already working in Antarctica, that would like to enhance and update knowledge of staff. It is suitable as professional development training for existing and new staff.

It can also be used by individuals starting out or interested in a potential career in Antarctica.

Antarctic EIA Short Course - Cumulative Impact Assessment

Purpose

Antarctic EIA Short Course is designed for those wishing to enhance their knowledge of the EIA process and methodology with best practice, case studies and up to date information, with a focus on cumulative impact assessment.  

The course is for those with a professional interest in Environmental Impact Assessment in Antarctica at all levels.

The course is in the process of achieving endorsement by the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES).

Who Should Attend?

This short course is designed for professionals and organizations involved in environmental impact assessments for Antarctic projects and activities, at all levels. It is for those wishing to enhance, up-skill, refresh or those starting out including:

  • Experienced Professionals: Those already conducting EIAs in Antarctica who wish to update their knowledge of best practices and methodologies. ​

  • Antarctic Professionals: Consultants, policymakers, and staff responsible for submitting or reviewing Antarctic Permit applications and environmental assessments.

  • EIA professionals: seeking to deepen their understanding of cumulative impact assessment.

  • Recent graduates, environmental professionals, and staff members of organizations working in Antarctica who are new to EIAs. ​

  • Cumulative Impact Assessment Best Practices: Understand the definition and types of cumulative impacts and best practice methodologies which can be applied to Antarctic projects and activities.

  • Environmental Assessment Methodology and Guidelines: Gain insights into best practice for assessing the significance of environmental impacts, using case studies and proven methodologies to ensure thorough and transparent assessments. ​

  • EIA Screening Process in Antarctica: Learn how to screen projects or activities to determine whether they require a Preliminary Environmental Evaluation (PEE) or Initial Environmental Evaluation (IEE) in accordance with the Antarctic Protocol. ​
